11 Howard Hotel New York is a NYC hotel with some serious design pedigree! It is the first U.S project for Danish Studio Space Copenhagen, and combines plenty of Danish custom-made pieces alongside some stand-out American Art and sculpture, curated by the hotel's owner and art collector Aby Rosen.

One of Alexander Calder's last mobile's from 1976 (the year he passed away) is the feature in the hotel's lobby, the leather-clad balustraded spiral staircase also is home to a neon artwork by Dan Attoe, and bedrooms host ceramic wall art by Katie Yang.

The artwork is not just reserved for the interiors - an enormous mural by students mentored by Jeff Koons covers the whole south facade of the hotel, which occupies part of a former post office in the heart of Soho in Lower Manhattan.

Throughout the hotel, the pared back ethos of Danish design is partnered with a very New York sensibility. Natural materials, a calming colour palette and bespoke fixtures and fittings all add up to create an environment that has been carefully conceived with longevity in mind.

Space Copenhagen co-founder Signe Bindslev Henriksen commented; "We love things that age well. It's part of our responsibility that a project lives on in a beautiful manner long after we've left".

11 Howard has a guiding principle of 'conscious hospitality' - where every decision on design, amenities and guest services is based on awareness, purpose and thoughtful consideration - including giving a proportion of every reservation to charity.

We absolutely love the materials and finishes used though out - the bathroom above has all the understated glamour you would expect from this Danish/New York collaboration!

We particularly like the lighting plan - and this is another aspect of great hotel design that can easily be interpreted in a residential interior. Take a look at the image above - the shelves are highlighted with LED lighting providing a soft glow from underneath, the ceiling spotlights angled onto the chairs providing great task lighting with the table light adding to the ambience.

The combination of Art, lighting, the colour palette and custom-made items all contribute to the 'conscious hospitality' of 11 Howard and what co-founder of Space Copenhagen's Peter Bundgaard Rutzou says is 'The human factor. We're always thinking about the impact space has on people'.
Oh my - we could seriously have SO much fun if we were let loose in New York!
